Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light
That check engine light means your car is asking for help. We use advanced diagnostic tools to read fault codes accurately and explain exactly what they mean.
Learn MoreFrom muffler replacement to full exhaust system repairs, we eliminate leaks and excessive noise while keeping your emissions in check.
A properly functioning exhaust system does three things: it routes combustion gases safely away from the passenger cabin, reduces engine noise to a comfortable level, and controls emissions to keep your vehicle passing Michigan's emissions testing requirements. When any part of the system develops a leak or fails, all three functions are compromised, and you may not notice until the problem is severe.
East Side Auto Center has been repairing exhaust systems on Detroit's east side for years. From a rattling heat shield to a completely rusted-through exhaust pipe, our technicians diagnose the issue accurately and repair or replace only what's necessary. We don't push full-system replacements when a targeted repair will do the job.
Muffler repair and replacement is the service most drivers associate with exhaust work. A failing muffler makes itself known. Your car suddenly sounds like a much louder, angrier version of itself. We stock replacement mufflers for a wide range of vehicles and can typically complete the job the same day. When the muffler is still serviceable but a mounting bracket or resonator is the issue, we repair the specific component rather than replacing the whole unit.
Catalytic converter service is another common need. The catalytic converter reduces harmful emissions by converting carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides into less harmful compounds. A failing converter triggers oxygen sensor codes, reduces fuel efficiency, and can cause your vehicle to fail Michigan's OBD-II emissions test. We diagnose converter efficiency through scan tools before recommending replacement, ensuring the diagnosis is accurate.
Exhaust leaks can occur anywhere along the system: at the manifold, flex pipe, mid-pipe, or welded joints. Even a small leak allows exhaust gases to escape into areas they shouldn't reach. Carbon monoxide intrusion into the cabin is a serious health risk, and an exhaust leak near the firewall can make its way through HVAC vents. We use smoke testing and physical inspection to locate leaks precisely and seal them with proper welds or replace the affected section.
Michigan requires OBD-II emissions testing for vehicles in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. A faulty oxygen sensor, degraded catalytic converter, or exhaust leak that causes an unresolved fault code will result in a failed emissions test and a denied registration renewal. If your check engine light is on and you have an upcoming emissions test, bring your vehicle to East Side Auto Center. We'll diagnose the codes, repair the root cause, and ensure your vehicle is ready to pass.
