Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light
That check engine light means your car is asking for help. We use advanced diagnostic tools to read fault codes accurately and explain exactly what they mean.
Learn MoreFrom scheduled maintenance to unexpected repairs, we handle it all. Our experienced technicians work on all makes and models and stand behind every repair.
East Side Auto Center is Detroit's east side neighborhood shop, the kind of place where the technicians know your car and the service advisors give you straight answers. We handle the full range of automotive repairs and maintenance, from a $30 wiper blade installation to a complete engine cooling system overhaul. If it needs fixing, we can handle it.
Our ASE-certified technicians work on all makes and models: domestic cars and trucks, Japanese imports, European vehicles, and everything in between. We keep a well-stocked parts inventory for common repairs so most jobs are completed the same day your vehicle comes in. For less common parts, our supplier network means we can typically source what's needed by the next morning.
A tune-up in the modern sense means servicing the ignition system and ensuring the engine is running at peak efficiency. This includes spark plug replacement (a job that ranges from straightforward on a four-cylinder to more involved on a V8 with coil-on-plug ignition), ignition coil inspection, air filter replacement, fuel filter service where accessible, and a throttle body cleaning when carbon buildup is causing idle issues. A proper tune-up restores fuel economy, reduces emissions, and eliminates hesitation or rough idle that develops as components age.
Scheduled maintenance services we handle include timing belt and serpentine belt replacements. The timing belt is a critical component on interference engines. If it breaks without warning, the engine is severely damaged. Manufacturers specify replacement intervals (typically 60,000–100,000 miles), and we keep track of your history to help you stay ahead of this service. Serpentine belts drive your alternator, power steering pump, water pump, and AC compressor. A snapped serpentine belt strands you immediately.
Water pump replacement is a repair we perform regularly, often in conjunction with a timing belt service since the two components share access on many engines. A failing water pump can weep coolant from its weep hole, make a grinding noise from its bearing, or fail its impeller, reducing coolant flow until the engine overheats. Radiator replacement, cooling system flush, and thermostat replacement round out our cooling system services.
Detroit's temperature extremes, from January's deep cold to August's heat and humidity, stress cooling systems significantly. We recommend a cooling system inspection every two years and a full flush and coolant replacement every 50,000 miles or as specified by your manufacturer.
Starter motor and alternator failures are common repairs that strand Detroit drivers unexpectedly. A failing alternator doesn't charge the battery properly, causing the battery to drain while driving and eventually leaving you stranded. A worn starter cranks the engine sluggishly or makes a clicking noise without starting. We test both components properly, not just the battery, to confirm the correct diagnosis before replacing any parts.
Battery replacement, battery terminal cleaning, and charging system testing are services we perform for walk-in customers and as part of routine maintenance inspections. We carry a range of quality batteries to fit any budget and install them with proper terminal treatment to resist corrosion.
